Chennai: Following last year’s state wide protest to ban Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu, the event is set to be held on January 14, 15 and 16 on the occasion of Pongal, said media reports. The Madurai district administration which overlooks the event is all geared up to welcome thousands of people who take part in the bull taming event. As per the district administration, 50,000 to 1 lakh spectators are expected to witness the three-day event.
On January 14, Jallikattu will be held in Avaniyapuram and at Palamedu and Allanganallur in Madurai district on the successive days respectively.
On Saturday, 1000 bull tamers and 1000 bulls were registered with district authorities. District collector Veera Ragahava Rao said that safety and ensuring regulations are followed were the main criteria for the administration.
“All bulls will be medically checked before they enter the running arena. They will be checked for alcohol in blood and any physical injuries. Any bull tamer who tries to catch the horn of the bull or any other part will be disqualified and removed from the play arena,” said Rao.
PETA and other pro animal organisations are against Jallikattu as they believe that bulls are harmed during the event. The veterinary doctors have a task cut out ahead of the event to make sure the bulls are not hurt.
For the first time, bulls will be checked for alcohol content in them. “Saliva swabs from the bull will be collected and chemically tested for alcohol. This is done just before the bull enters the running arena. If tested positive, the bull will be not allowed to participate,” said Suresh Kumar, veterinarian doctor.
Out of 1000 registered bulls, only around 600 will participate as the timings for the event will be from 8am to 3pm on all three days.
