New Delhi: Historian Ramachandra Guha was among 30 protesters detained in Bengaluru ahead of their planned protest march against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on Thursday. In now-deleted tweets to users, Airtel said voice, internet and SMS services have been snapped in some parts of Delhi, including ITO where many newspapers have their offices.
The police in more than 10 cities have not given permission to organise protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Permission for any rally was withheld in Delhi, with gathering of four or more people banned near the Red Fort in central Delhi and other areas in the national capital. Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav was detained while on his way to Red Fort. The cities where protests are not allowed also include Bengaluru and Lucknow. Much of the protest against the amended citizenship law has taken place in the north-east, West Bengal and Delhi.
“I have just been detained from Lal Qila. About a thousand protesters already detained. Thousands on the way. Am told we are being taken to Bawana,” Yogendra Yadav tweeted. The police on Wednesday denied permission to the protesters to gather near the Red Fort, saying the request could not be “acceded to from law and order and traffic point of view”.
The Delhi Traffic Police tweeted they have barricaded the road that connects Delhi and Gurgaon. The move to stop protesters from entering the national capital in large numbers led to a long traffic jam, with some motorists tweeting that they have been stuck on the road for hours. People going to the airport are also stuck.
The Delhi Metro tweeted entry and exit gates at 18 stations have been shut. Some of them are: Lal Quila, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Vishwavidyalaya, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jasola Vihar, Shaheen Bagh and Munirka.
Many organisations, political parties and the civil society have come together to organise the protests and schedules mentioning the cities, venues and timings flooded the social media since afternoon.
