Relieved, says Jigna Vora after acquittal in J Dey murder case

he is a strong girl and will come back,” said a relative of Jigna Vora outside the CBI special court after the verdict in the murder case of crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.

Vora, a journalist, was among the 12 people accused of murdering Dey. She was accused of passing vital information about him to underworld don Chhota Rajan.

After nearly eight years, the court on Wednesday convicted Rajan and sentenced him to life. Of the 12 accused, Vora and Joseph Paulsen were acquitted of all charges.

As soon as the judge pronounced the verdict, Vora broke down in the court. She kept crying and hugging her family members for being acquitted of the charges after eight years.

“The last 24 hours before the verdict were very difficult. She was so tensed that she herself could not make out what she was speaking. All our family members visited her and stayed with her through the night. The night before the day of the judgment was very difficult for all of us,” said one of her relatives.

On Wednesday Vora reached the court almost an hour before the time of the verdict. She met her family and went straight inside the courtroom. Other accused reached the court by 11am. They too were accompanied by their family members.

When the matter came up, the judge did not take much time to deliver the verdict–nine convicted and two acquitted.

Hearing this, Vora and her family broke down inside the court.

“The past eight years were extremely tough for Vora. She was devastated and has gone through a lot. There was time when we even feared for her mental health. But Jigna is a strong girl and we know she will come back. We knew that she is innocent and the court has also said so,” said another relative.

After the judgment, Vora came out of the courtroom, met other family members and broke down before them. She counted the number of charges she had been acquitted. “I am so relived of being free from all charges,” she said.

Another of her relatives said, “She was the most-talented reporter of her time. This case has put her many years back. Who is responsible for this? She has so much to recover now. But, we know she is very strong girl.”

Meanwhile, Paulson too was happy over his acquittal but refused to speak to the media.
