New Delhi: Khan Market Trader’s Association will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh, requesting them to not change the name of ‘Khan Market’ to ‘Valmiki Market’. The traders of Khan Market held a meeting on Sunday to discuss BJP leader Deepak Tanwar’s request to change the name of the oldest and the costliest markets in India.
Sanjiv Mehra, president of Khan Market Trader’s Association told India today TV that they will write a letter to the prime minister once a new Cabinet takes the oath.
“We have unanimously decided that we don’t want the name of this well-known market to change. We will write a letter to the prime minister and Home minister after May 30 once the new government takes oath,” he said.
Sanjit Mehra further said, “Khan Market is not just a name, it’s an identity the place has built over 70 years. Khan Market is also a part of our identity now.”
Chic and modish, Khan Market is one of the most well-known markets in Old Delhi and was named after freedom fighter Khan Abdul Jabbar Khan (brother of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan).
The market seems to have got attention after Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned the “Khan Market gang” in an interview and said that his image hasn’t been created by the Lutyens Delhi or the “Khan Market gang”, but rather by his own 45 years of toil and hard work.
However, a BJP leader, Deepak Tanwar, took PM Modi’s statement quite seriously and recently requested the home minister to change Khan Market’s name to ‘Valmiki Market’ due to Lord Valmiki’s historical significance.
There was a stir in the market after PM Modi’s “Khan Market gang” statement. However, when India Today TV team visited the Khan Market and spoke with a few commoners and traders in Khan Market, they reacted to BJP’s re-election in a positive way.
