Triple talaq law will make Muslim women fearless: Amit Shah

NEW DELHI: BJP president Amit Shah on Wednesday termed the triple talaq ordinance as “historic”, saying that it will help Muslim women lead a fearless and respectful life.

“The ordinance is also a subject of self introspection and guilt for the political parties, which forced the Muslim women suffer because of the social evil for decades only for vote-bank,” Shah said and added that the ordinance is yet another example of the Modi government’s commitment towards women empowerment.
As the Union cabinet cleared the ordinance to make instant triple talaq a penal offence, law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The ordinance was required as the practice continues unabated.”

The law minister also attacked the Congress saying the main opposition party was not supporting the bill in Rajya Sabha under “vote-bank pressures”. “It is my serious charge that Sonia Gandhiji has maintained silence on the issue,” he said.

Hailing the government decision, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra took a dig at Congress leader Kapil Sibal, saying he defended this practice in the Supreme Court.
