Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani will be retained for a second term while Nitin Patel will remain his deputy, said media reports. Rupani won the Gujarat Assembly election from Rajkot West. His party, the BJP, now has 100 seats in the Assembly, thanks to support from independent MLA and former Congress leader Ratansinh Rathod.
“There is no washout of BJP in this election. Congress’ top leadership has lost, our top leaders have won,” said Rupani. Calling it a very good verdict for Gujarat, the CM said, “Percentage of votes have increased. It is no small feat. It was a challenge to form the government with a comfortable majority. We have formed the government, which is an achievement”.
The BJP initially won 99 seats (the Congress won 77) in the Gujarat Assembly election, falling well short of party chief Amit Shah’s target of 150. The BJP’s seat tally was lower than in the previous election, and its performance was widely considered to be below par.
The BJP, which has governed Gujarat for over two decades, will now remain in power till 2022. It will now set its sights on the seven states that go to polls next year – including four big ones, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan.
Three of those states currently have BJP governments. Karnataka is governed by the Congress, and will be a major electoral test for both the BJP and its arch-rival.
