CM: BJP has failed people of Assam, set to face defeat

The BJP Government has failed the people of Assam and is set to face defeat in Assembly elections in the state, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Wednesday in poll-bound Assam.

Addressing the media in Guwahati, the Congress leader accused the BJP of failing to fulfil the promises made to the people of Assam who he said had decided to unseat the BJP.

The BJP has divided the society on communal lines and has not implemented the Assam Accord, he claimed.

Baghel charged the state government with working like a syndicate to promote cow smuggling to neighbouring Bangladesh.

The export of meat from Bangladesh increased to 211 percent. Though the Assam government claims it has controlled smuggling, the monitoring and action to be taken have been handed over to the veterinary department which Baghel said cannot work without police help.

Even BJP MP Maneka Gandhi had raised questions over cow smuggling from Assam, he added.

Baghel said unemployment had reached new heights in Assam. The BJP had promised 60 lakh jobs in a year in Assam but the number of unemployed youths rose from 16.42 lakhs in 2016-18 to more than 20 lakhs now.

Covid-19 pushed more people to join the ranks of the unemployed, he added. No wonder people from Assam are moving to other states in search of work, Baghel said.

The BJP government is also silent on hiking minimum wages to tea plantation workers. The Congress has promised Rs 365 and this will be given, he said, citing promises made and implemented in Chhattisgarh.
