Bhopal: Amidst the ongoing political turmoil in Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Kamal Nath on Friday met governor Lalji Tandon and apprised him of the current political situation, said a report carried by The Week. He sought Tandon’s intervention with the union Home Minister to ‘ensure release of MLAs held in captivity in Bengaluru’.
The chief minister submitted a three-page letter to the governor, giving the details of the incidents that happened from March 3 midnight till now and accused the BJP of engaging in a ‘conspiracy of abducting the Congress MLAs to destabilise the duly constituted state government’.
Kamal Nath also said in the letter: “I invite and would welcome a floor test of my government in the forthcoming session of Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly already notified from 16th March 2020, on a date fixed by Speaker’.
Later, speaking to media persons, Kamal Nath said that floor test would be undertaken but it was possible only after confirmation that the MLAs had resigned on their own will. He reiterated allegations that the 22 MLAs had been abducted by the BJP and said that ‘if it was not so then the MLAs should be presented before the media’. To a question whether the state Assembly session was likely to be deferred due to coronavirus scare, the CM said that ‘currently the coronavirus is in the politics here. Rest we will see.”
The letter by Kamal Nath also mentioned the fact that the resignations of the Congress MLAs were carried to the Speaker by BJP leaders and said that this demonstrates complicity of BJP leaders in the entire conspiracy and illegal actions. He also drew attention to the incident of assault and detention of Madhya Pradesh ministers Jitu Patwari and Lakhan Singh along with father of MLA Manoj Choudhary by Bengaluru police.
“In these disturbing circumstances, the very edifice of democracy is in danger. Trust of a transparent democratic process seems lost. It merits full investigation and enquiry so that persons responsible for de-railing the democratic institutional process are exposed and punished,” he stated in the letter.
The CM also assured the people of the state that the government will not ‘leave any stone unturned to ensure triumph of democracy and the legislative process to uphold the Constitution and the values enshrined therein.”
Meanwhile, there are rumours that MLAs including six ministers might return to Bhopal from Bengaluru on Friday afternoon and participate in the Rajya Sabha nomination filing process of Jyotiraditya Scindia on the State Assembly premises. Sources said the MLAs were also likely to meet the Assembly speaker and confirm their resignations personally.
If this happened, the Kamal Nath government was likely to be reduced officially to minority by Friday evening, political watchers said. When Kamal Nath was questioned about likely return of MLAs from Bengaluru, he said he did not know anything about that.
The MLAs were likely to come in three chartered planes and security protocol was put up at Bhopal Airport in anticipation, though there were indications that the MLAs had not left Bengaluru till noon despite processes being on there. Karnataka state Congress president D.K. Shivakumar has also met the Bengaluru police commissioner.
