Ken-Betwa River Project to be sent to National Wildlife Board for approval
Bhopal. The 13th meeting of State Wildlife Board chaired by Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan discussed various aspects and issues pertaining to Ken-Betwa River Link project here today.
Expert members of board discussed possible effects on wildlife due to the project. The Chief Minister said that it should be ensured that wildlife is not harmed in any way. Their habitats are not endangered. He directed to initiate precautionary methods for this.
It is noteworthy that situation of drought in Bundelkhand region will end due to Ken-Betwa River Link project. It will irrigate 5.75 lakh hectares and provide drinking water to about 14 lakh people.
The members consented to send proposal for Ken-Betwa River Link project to National Wildlife Board for approval. Consensus arrived on the conditions that in lieu of submergence affected area, other forest area in the east should be included in the core area. Villages in forest areas should be resettled on project’s expenditure. Landscape management planning should be undertaken through Indian Wildlife Institute. Dam construction should be completed at the earliest and labourers should be stayed outside Panna national park. A study should be undertaken through Bombay Natural History Society to assess the impact on habitats of vultures due to the project. Ecological flow will be ensured in downstream of the dam.

Maximum number of leopards in MP
Later, at a meeting of state level standing committee for tiger conservation was informed that through efforts of the state government, forest crimes have declined. During a recent survey, number of leopards been counted as 1817, which is maximum in the country. The meeting was presided over by Forest Minister Shri Gaurishankar Shejwar.
