Madhya Pradesh wheat shines at Jaipur
Bhopal: Remarkable increase has been witnessed in wheat crop and production area in Madhya Pradesh during the last five years. Wheat was sown in the year 2007-08 in 41 lakh hectare with production of 67 lakh 40 thousand metric tonnes whereas it was sown in 48 lakh 90 thousand hectare area in the year 2011-12 producing one crore 27 lakh metric tonnes of wheat. This increase is 88.55 percent as compared to the figure of the year 2007-08. This information was given at the 51st national workshop of crop researchers at Jaipur recently. The workshop attended by representatives from seven countries was held to review last five years’ production and chalk out a strategy to increase wheat production in future.
Scientists describe increase as emulating for other states
Lauding this remarkable increase, Director General of Indian Agriculture Research Institute Dr. Sandhu and Project Director Dr. Indu Sharma described it as an example for other states.
Per hectare crop productivity in the state has also increased from 1714 kilogrammes to 2609 kilogrammes. With this increase in productively rate, Madhya Pradesh has become the third largest wheat producing state in the country after Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. As a result of Madhya Pradesh government’s announcement to give Rs. 100 per quintal bonus, a record quantity of 96 lakh 60 thousand metric tonnes of wheat was brought to wholesale food grains markets.
At the workshop, Director Farmers’ Welfare and Agriculture Development Dr. D.N. Sharma informed that this increase in wheat production has become possible as a result of cent percent seed treatment, use of early varieties, encouragement to line method of sowing, use of modern agricultural implements and techniques, increase in area under irrigation and change in irrigation methods, increase in subsidy for sprinklers and rain guns, use of proper pesticides etc.
Target to produce 134.80 lakh metric tonnes of wheat
According to the Director Agriculture, a target has been set to produce 134.80 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in the state during Rabi season 2012-13. It is 100 percent more than the target of the year 2007-08. For this, target has been set to sow wheat in 50 thousand hectare area and increase per hectare yield to 2710 kilogrammes. This year’s good rains will help achieve this target.
