A victory procession celebrating Team India’s win took a tense turn as two groups clashed in Mhow late Sunday night. Stone pelting, arson, and protests kept the garrison town on edge as police worked to restore order.
The trouble began around 10:30 PM near Jama Masjid over firecrackers. What started as a minor disagreement quickly escalated, with tensions spilling into areas like Maanak Chowk, Patti Bazaar, Market Chowk, and Connaught Road. Vehicles were damaged, shops suffered losses, and the situation grew chaotic.
Indore (Rural) SP Hitika Vasal was among the senior officials to arrive at the scene. Taking charge of the situation, she led the police response, ensuring rapid deployment of forces in the most affected areas. Alongside ASP Rupesh Dwivedi, she monitored the clashes firsthand, directing officers to prevent further violence.
Tear gas shells were fired, and baton charges were used to disperse mobs as authorities worked to bring the situation under control. As tensions escalated, army personnel were also deployed as a precautionary measure.
At Jama Masjid, protesters expressed their anger, raising slogans against the police. Some incidents of arson were reported, and authorities worked through the night to contain the damage. Security remains tightened across key areas, with senior officers keeping a close watch to prevent further escalation, said sources.
As the unrest settled, over a dozen vehicles had been damaged or torched, and local businesses were assessing their losses. The impact of the events remain visible in the streets, they said.
A heavy police force remains stationed in Patti Bazaar to prevent further flare-ups. ASP Rupesh Dwivedi assured that the situation is now under control, while officials continue to assess the full extent of the flare-up.
