Woman Hurt as Neighbours Brawl over Attack on Stray Dog

The incident took place at Bairagarh, a normally controversy shy locality.

Bhopal

Offended by her attempts to stop them from beating a stray canine, four men pounced on the bleeding heart and wounded her near the Thaddaram community centre in Bairagarh on Tuesday.

Geeta Thanwani, a pet lover, sustained six stitches on her head after Tillu and Amit Tilwani, and Chandraprakash and Bharat Belani attacked her when she attempted to stop them from thrashing a stray animal.

The five are neighbours. Bairagarh police have registered a case against the four accused.

Geeta later alleged that the police had not registered a case under stringent provisions against the accused, who she said had threatened to douse her with petrol and set her on fire.

Dog-related violence is not new in the city, as desperate citizens attack dogs to shoo them away from their houses and loved ones. This action does not sit well with pet lovers, who blame the attackers for indulging in cruelty towards the animals.

Dog bite cases have been rising; though the Bhopal Municipal Corporation dog squad picks up stray mongrels and releases them only after they are spayed, the growing number of canines in the city suggests that all may not be well with the system.
