Highlights of yesterday’s IPL match result: Know who won CSK vs RR match on 31st March
Match 11 of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 edition saw Chennai Super Kings (CSK) host their second home game of the season wherein they took on 2008 champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Sunday evening (March 31). CSK prevailed on top of RR, at M.A.Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai (Chepauk), as visitors failed to chase down 176. Riding on MS Dhoni’s unbeaten 75 (off 46 balls), along with important contributions from Suresh Raina and Dwayne Bravo, hosts recovered from a poor start. In their defence, CSK bowlers combined to win by 8 runs.
1) CSK openers were rusty from the onset. Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu looked in off colours and paid the price with early departures. While Rayudu tried to be cheeky, by making room outside off stump, to edge one to Jos Buttler, Watson was outfoxed by Ben Stokes’ change in pace. RR were on top and dictated terms from thereon till the halfway mark.
2) CSK were in a spot of bother reeling at 27 for 3 inside 5 overs. They needed a partnership and had their experienced duo — MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina — in the middle to see off the crisis. As expected, the pair took time initially before Raina attacked the spinners. Dhoni was content to play the second fiddle as the partnership went past 50-run mark.
3) Raina fell for a sedate 32-ball 36 when he missed a slower ball from Jaydev Unadkat. However, he had contributed in CSK’s recovery by then. The left-hander was looking in his elements in what was his 150th match for CSK in the tournament. He is the most capped player in the IPL (179) with 29 coming for now-defunct Gujarat Lions (GL). In addition, this was his 50th encounter at Chepauk.
Above all, Raina amassed 6000 T20 runs on Indian soil before getting out. His tally is the highest-ever by a batsman in one country. PHEW!
4) Dhoni turned back the clock as a Dhonisque finish entertained CSK fans. The right-hander added another 50-run stand with Dwayne Bravo and took on Unadkat, Dhawal Kulkarni and Jofra Archer in the death overs. Unadkat bowled in his arc whereas the former Indian skipper used Archer’s pace to add boundaries in his kitty. As a result, CSK managed 175 for 5. His innings included 4 fours and 4 sixes; scoring 53.33% of runs in boundaries.
It was another calculative innings from the CSK skipper. He scored his first 33 runs off 30 balls (with only 2 boundaries). In his next 16 deliveries, he added 45 runs (including 6 boundaries). AN MS SPECIAL, RIGHT?
5) Deepak Chahar gave hosts the desired start. As often, he was used in the early overs to complete his spell. The pacer bowled according to a packed off-side field and forced the uppish drives from Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson to send them packing. The prized scalp of Buttler, however, came off Shardul Thakur’s bowling.
6) Post Chahar, Dhoni got an able ally in Imran Tahir. The South African removed in-form Rahul Tripathi with a simple return catch. The right-hander was looking good in his 24-ball 39. Further, he removed Steve Smith who struggled for timing. The wily spinner returned with 2 for 23 and only gave away a solitary boundary.
7) With Smith, Rahane, Rahul, Buttler back in the hut, it was curtains for RR. However, a major twist in the plot beckoned courtesy Stokes-Archer. The left-hander started the onslaught once the chase went down to the final few overs. Archer, on the other hand, came with only one intention: to tonk everything offered in his arc. Stokes played Bravo’s variations with ease and Archer’s muscle power suddenly reduced the equation to 12 off 6 balls (from 54 off 24 when the pair got along).
8) Bravo made amends from his second-last over. He was given the final over with only 12 remaining in the bank. Removing Stokes on the first ball, the DJ Bravo show commenced. He resorted to slower yorkers and the pressure led to RR batsmen giving away their scalps. From a villain to hero, Bravo led CSK’s narrow-escape to enable an 8-run win.
CSK remain on top of the points table with three wins on the trot. RR, on the other hand, are languishing at the seventh spot.
