India vs South Africa: Sunil Gavaskar to present ICC Test Championship Mace to Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli will be presented with the ICC Test Championship Mace from the International Cricket Council at Newlands, Cape Town on Saturday after the third and final Twenty20 International against South Africa.
India are looking to end the South African tour on a high. After losing the three-Test series 2-1, India bounced back strongly to clinch the ODI series 5-1. The ongoing T20I series is currently tied at 1-1 with the series-decider to be played tonight.
On behalf of the ICC, ICC Cricket Hall of Famers Sunil Gavaskar and Graeme Pollock of South Africa will make the presentation immediately after the awards ceremony for the T20I series. (3rd T20I Preview)
India have ensured the number one spot on the ICC Test Team Rankings and a prize of USD 1 million after their victory in the third and final Test at Johannesburg against South Africa last month.
The win had ensured that no team can move ahead of India in the Test rankings at the April 3 cut-off date.
India came to South Africa on the back of nine consecutive Test series victories but that unbeaten streak was broken when the Kohli-led side lost the first two Tests in Cape Town and Centurion.
After losing a four-Test series in Australia in 2014-15, India went to Sri Lanka and beat the islanders 2-1 in Kohli’s first full series as captain.
Next up, they defeated South Africa 3-0 at home before beating West Indies 2-0 in their own den.
Thereafter, began a sensational run at home during which they defeated New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia.
India again travelled to Sri Lanka in 2017 and whitewashed them 3-0. On the return trip to India, Kohli led from the front with 610 runs as the hosts won the three-match series 1-0.
The South Africa tour marked the beginning of a long overseas run. India’s next Test assignment will be when they host Afghanistan in a one-off Test in June before flying to England for a marathon series.
