Lasith Malinga’s big no-ball against RCB sparks massive controversy in IPL 2019
Lasith Malinga was spotted overstepping by a considerable margin on the final delivery of the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians on Thursday. The on-field umpires failed to call it a no-ball and RCB went on to lose the game by 6 runs after failing to get 7 runs off the final delivery. All-rounder Shivam Dube, who had smashed a six on the very first delivery of the final over, was on the strike when Malinga bowled a no-ball and got away with it.
Later replays showed that the pacer had overstepped by a considerable margin. If adjudged a no-ball, the decision could have seen the match go in the host’s favour. RCB were chasing a hefty target of 188 runs and needed 17 off the final over when Dube struck a six off the first ball to bring down the equation to 11 required off 5 balls.
However, he and AB de Villiers could only muster four singles in the next four deliveries as pressure mounted on the duo. With seven required off the last ball, Malinga triumphed over Dube and helped his side secure a thrilling win, courtesy an umpiring howler. The video of Malinga’s no-ball has since gone viral on social media.
After winning the toss at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Kohli invited Mumbai to bat first. Openers Rohit Sharma (48) and Quinton de Kock (23) got the visitors off to a flyer with a 54-run stand for the first wicket. Rohit then combined with Suryakumar Yadav (38) to add another 33 runs for the second wicket. Cameos from Yuvraj Singh ( 23 off 12 balls) and Hardik Pandya ( 32 off 14 balls ) powered Mumbai to a strong total of 187/8 in 20 overs.
Parthiv Patel (31) and Virat Kohli (46) played two crucial knocks for RCB to set the platform for a successful chase. AB then took the onus on him and almost took his side over the line with a sensational knock of 70 off 41 balls. However, RCB eventually fell short by 6 runs after some stellar death bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Malinga.
