‘Play hard but have respect for opponents’, Virat Kohli reveals reason for ‘Notebook’ celebrationCricket

On Friday, the Indian fans were in for a treat in Hyderabad as skipper Virat Kohli was in his elements and took the hosts past the finish line in a daunting run-chase versus Kieron Pollard-led West Indies. Chasing a mammoth 208, India needed one of their big three — KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma or Kohli — to come out all guns blazing.

While Rohit perished soon, KL Rahul was removed for an impressive 62. While the onus fell on the Indian skipper, it is widely known that he thrives under pressure and did the same with a career-best 94* to take hosts 1-0 up in the three T20Is. Though the right-hander didn’t start well and looked rusty, the 31-year-old more than made up for it with his textbook-style shots and impressive hitting without trying to ‘slog’.

Tempers flared in Hyderabad too with Kohli and Windies pacer Kesrick Williams having some exchanges in between. Eventually, Kohli vented out his jubilation and imitated Williams’ iconic ‘Notebook’ celebration post the victory shot following a huge roar.

While Kohli turned back the clock with his aggressive conduct on Friday, cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar asked him on his ‘Notebook’ celebration in the presentation ceremony.

While Kohli revealed that he remembers everything done by the opposition when they get the better of him cheaply (in this case, Williams’ Notebook celebration from the Jamaica encounter between both sides earlier in the year), he maintained that his imitation was only a way of depicting his domination after settling scores. He added that everything was in great spirits, with handshakes all around, and that is what the game is all about.

Opting to bowl first, Kohli-led Indian bowlers were poor and only Ravindra Jadeja remained economical whereas Yuzvendra Chahal returned with 2 for 36. In reply, India had plenty to catch up in the last ten overs but went over the line with 8 balls to spare courtesy Kohli’s masterclass (94 not out).

The penultimate tie will be held on Sunday (December 8) in Greenfield International Stadium, Thiruvananthapuram.
