China’s ‘beautiful governor’ sentenced to 13 years in prison: had physical relations with 58 colleagues, took Rs 71 crore bribe, said she cannot make eye contact with her family

Zhong Yang, the governor of Guaizhou province, famous as the ‘Beautiful Governor’ in China, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison. She has also been fined Rs 1 crore 16 lakh. 52-year-old Zhong Yang has been convicted of taking a bribe of about Rs 71 crore and having physical relations with 58 people working with her.

According to the South China Morning Post, Zhong has been the deputy secretary and governor of Guaizhou from the Communist Party of China. She joined the party at the age of 22. In January 2023, China’s Guaizhou Radio mentioned the controversies related to Zhong in its report.

He was accused of using his position to get big contracts for his favourite companies under the guise of government investment. In one case, Zhong got a businessman a contract to build a high-tech industrial state on 1.7 lakh square meters of land. This businessman had close relations with Zhong.

Zhong also benefited greatly from this deal. According to the documents, Zhong used to help those companies with whom she had personal relations. In April 2023, the Supervision Committee of Guaizhou Province announced an investigation against Zhong. During this time, Zhong was also accused of having physical relations with 58 men.

Arrested in 2023, expelled from the party Most of these people were those whose business had benefited from Zhong. Some others also included people who worked with Zhong Yang. According to Chinese media reports, Zhong used to meet these people on the pretext of business trips or overtime. Zhong was arrested in April last year.

After this, in September 2023, China’s Xinhua News Agency reported that Zhong has been expelled from the Communist Party and the National People’s Congress. In a documentary made on her, Zhong Yang said that she regrets her actions. She can no longer look into the eyes of her co-workers, family and political leaders.

“I thought that this way I could get some trusted businessmen to help me with political matters. My parents advised me to be honest in my work, but I did not listen to them,” Zhong said.
