US State Department spokesperson said on Wednesday that senior diplomat Donald Lu’s meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was part of a normal diplomatic interaction.
According to news agency ANI, the spokesperson said that our policy has been to talk to the governments of partner countries as well as opposition leaders and people with social connections. He said that he cannot comment further on this private conversation.
Rahul met Lu on Monday. He is the Assistant Secretary of State for the South and Middle Asia Bureau of the US State Department. Lu is visiting India and Bangladesh this week. Donald Lu will first come to New Delhi. Here he will attend a business summit.
After this, Lu will participate in the eighth two plus two ministerial meeting between India and America. Then he will visit Bangladesh where he will meet the leaders of the interim government. He also visited Bangladesh in May this year.
Donald Lu’s name is associated with coups in South Asian countries. His name also came up after the fall of Imran Khan’s government in Pakistan. Imran Khan had openly named him and held him responsible.
Earlier this year, Lu testified in the US Parliament and denied the allegations of toppling the government in Pakistan. Last month, when Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in Bangladesh, Donald Lu’s name also came up. However, America flatly denied this.
Rahul met Pakistan supporter Ilhan Omar. Before this, Rahul Gandhi was on a 3-day US tour. During this, he met Indian immigrants, students and US lawmakers. Rahul also met US MP Ilhan Omar. Ilhan Omar is known for her anti-India statements.
41-year-old Ilhan Omar is a Democratic Party MP from Minnesota. Ilhan Omar visited Pakistan in 2022. During this time she also visited Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Omar also met former Pakistani Prime Ministers Shahbaz Sharif and Imran Khan. In June, Prime Minister Narendra Modi went on a state visit to the US. During this, he addressed a joint session of the US Parliament.
Ilhan Omar boycotted this session. She had accused PM Modi of discriminating against minorities under his regime.
