A fresh fuel price hike came into effect across India on Friday as public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) increased petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3 per litre. The revised rates became effective from 6 am and ended a long period of fuel price stability.
The fuel price hike follows rising tensions in West Asia and a sharp increase in global crude oil prices. Experts believe the latest increase may raise transportation costs and put additional pressure on household budgets.
In New Delhi, petrol now costs Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 90.67 per litre. Fuel prices remained higher in several states due to local taxes and transportation charges.
Fuel price hike pushes petrol above Rs 110 in Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, petrol prices crossed the Rs 110 mark in several cities after the latest fuel price hike. In Bhopal, petrol increased to Rs 109.71 per litre and diesel rose to Rs 94.88 per litre. In Ujjain, petrol reached Rs 110.16 per litre, while diesel was sold at Rs 95.34 per litre. In Jabalpur, petrol climbed to Rs 110.10 per litre and diesel touched Rs 95.28 per litre.
Residents across several cities expressed concern over the sudden increase. Many commuters said the fuel price hike would affect monthly budgets and increase daily travel expenses. Small business owners and transport operators also fear higher operating costs in the coming weeks.
Experts said the fuel price hike may soon affect the prices of essential goods. Diesel supports a major share of India’s transport network, and higher diesel prices often increase freight charges. This may push up the prices of vegetables, milk and other daily-use products.
Global crude oil prices recently crossed $110 per barrel, prompting OMCs to revise retail fuel rates. Government representatives, however, said India’s fuel prices remain lower than those in several countries facing similar energy pressures.
Transport unions in some states are also reviewing fare revisions after the latest increase. Consumers can check updated fuel prices through official oil company mobile applications and SMS services.
