The Madhya Pradesh CNG price hike has pushed compressed natural gas rates in Bhopal to Rs 94.75 per kg, adding to the financial burden on daily commuters and transport operators. The latest revision comes barely 10 days after the previous increase, marking the second hike in May.
Think Gas, which supplies CNG across Bhopal and nearby districts, raised prices by nearly Rs 1 per kg on Tuesday. Earlier, on 16 May, the company had increased rates by around Rs 3 per kg. In the last two months alone, CNG prices in the region have risen by nearly Rs 6 per kg.
The fresh increase comes amid volatility in global fuel markets linked to the ongoing Iran conflict and rising crude oil prices.
Madhya Pradesh CNG price hike impacts commuters
Bhopal currently has around 25 CNG filling stations operated by Think Gas across areas including Kolar Road, MANIT, Neelbad, Hoshangabad Road and Bairagarh. The city also has 12 petrol pumps offering CNG facilities.
Transporters and private vehicle owners say repeated fuel hikes are beginning to affect monthly budgets despite CNG remaining cheaper than petrol and diesel.
Three companies — Think Gas, GAIL and Avantika — supply CNG across Madhya Pradesh. While Think Gas covers Bhopal, Sehore, Rajgarh, Shivpuri and Vidisha regions, Avantika operates in Indore, Ujjain and Gwalior divisions.
Despite rising rates, demand for CNG vehicles remains strong. Automobile dealers estimate that sales of CNG-powered vehicles in Bhopal have increased by nearly 50% over the last three years, driven by lower running costs compared to petrol and diesel models.
Petrol and diesel prices also rising
Fuel prices across Madhya Pradesh have also climbed sharply this month. On 25 May, oil marketing companies increased petrol prices by Rs 2.61 per litre and diesel by Rs 2.71 per litre. In Bhopal, petrol is now priced at Rs 114.65 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 99.74 per litre.
