GWALIOR: An alleged gangster was attacked by a group of assailants in Gwalior after a reported attempt to shoot him failed, police said.
The incident occurred near a busy junction in the Morar area. According to police, the victim was travelling in an auto-rickshaw when several men stopped the vehicle and allegedly tried to open fire on him. The weapon reportedly malfunctioned, preventing the shot from being discharged.
The victim ran from the scene but was chased and assaulted with sticks, sustaining injuries to his head and legs, police said. Bystanders gathered at the location, prompting the attackers to flee.
The injured man later reached Morar police station and alleged that the attack was linked to an ongoing rivalry. He identified several suspects and claimed they were responsible for the assault.
Police took him to hospital for a medical examination, where they discovered he was wanted in an Arms Act case and had been absconding for some time. However, before officers could record his formal statement, he reportedly left the hospital without informing police and has not returned.
A 12-second video of the attack has since surfaced and is being examined by investigators.
Police said no First Information Report (FIR) has been registered so far because the injured man has not yet provided a formal statement. Authorities said further action will be taken once he is located and questioned.
