WhatsApp introduces username feature

WhatsApp is introducing a new username feature that will let users connect with others without sharing their phone numbers. The Meta-owned messaging platform said the update aims to improve privacy and give users more control over their contact details.

With the new feature, users can create a unique username that others can use to find them on WhatsApp. The move has led to comparisons with platforms such as Telegram, which already allow username-based chats.

However, some users have raised concerns about fake accounts, spam and unwanted messages. WhatsApp said it has added safety features to reduce these risks and protect users.

Users will be able to create or manage their username from the account section in WhatsApp settings. The username can be changed or removed later and can have up to 35 characters. WhatsApp will not show a public list of usernames, and users will need to enter the exact username to find an account.

The company has also introduced a Username Key feature, which adds another layer of privacy through a four-digit code. This option will be turned off by default.

WhatsApp accounts will still need a phone number. The company has also added measures to prevent misuse by restricting usernames already connected to other Meta platforms.

The feature is being rolled out globally and will reach more users in the coming months.
