New Delhi: Independent MP from Bihar’s Purnea, Pappu Yadav, was targeted after a man allegedly threw a shoe at him during a press conference in Delhi on Sunday, triggering a brief scuffle and security concerns. Police are investigating claims that the suspect was also carrying a knife.
Police identified the suspect as Sumit, a resident of Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. He was restrained by Yadav’s supporters and handed over to police shortly after the incident. Officers said a knife was recovered after the suspect was detained. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the recovery and whether the weapon was intended to be used during the incident.
According to police, the protest was linked to Yadav’s recent remarks concerning a law related to the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram Temple. The motive behind the incident remains under investigation.
According to sources, the suspect told police he acted because he was upset over what he described as remarks insulting Hindu saints. Police have not publicly confirmed that account.
Yadav alleged that the suspect intended to attack him with a knife and claimed there was a conspiracy against him. He also alleged that some religious figures had publicly called for violence against him and announced monetary rewards for his killing. Those claims have not been independently verified.
Yadav’s media convenor alleged that the suspect produced a knife after throwing the shoe and said supporters intervened before the situation escalated. He also claimed Delhi Police had been informed in advance about threats against the MP but failed to provide adequate security. Delhi Police has not publicly responded to those allegations.
Congress leader Pawan Khera criticised the police response in a post on X, questioning security arrangements for the MP. Police said the investigation is ongoing and all claims, including those related to the knife, are being verified.
