MUMBAI: Abhishek Sujit Sharma, a student from a Mumbai chawl, has secured admission to IIT Delhi after clearing the JEE Advanced examination, according to media reports.
Sharma secured an All India Rank of 2,456 and scored 199 marks in the examination. He also secured an OBC-NCL rank of 415.
Sharma lived with his family of four in a rented room in Harad Chawl, Lokmanya Tilak Nagar. His family paid Rs 3,000 in monthly rent. His father worked as a labourer at a steel fabrication company, and the family had limited financial resources.
Preparing for JEE Advanced was difficult because Sharma had little space and limited access to the internet. When his mobile data ran out, he would reportedly go to the terrace and use a neighbour’s Wi-Fi to attend online classes and study.
His parents also supported his education in their own way. According to reports, they often slept on the floor so that Sharma could use the bed to rest and study.
Sharma’s success has brought pride to his family and neighbourhood. He is reportedly the first student from his slum community to secure admission to an IIT.
His journey from a small rented room in Mumbai to IIT Delhi highlights the challenges he overcame while pursuing his education.
