Indian stock markets ended lower on Wednesday as rising crude oil prices and continued selling by foreign investors kept investors cautious, as per media reports.
The Sensex closed at 72,480.29, down 48.78 points, or 0.07%. The Nifty 50 fell 95.75 points, or 0.42%, to close at 22,620.45.
Both indices opened higher but lost their gains during the day. The wider market remained fairly steady. The Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.27%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 ended almost flat.
Media stocks led the gains, with the Nifty Media index rising 2.74%. Realty stocks gained 1.62%, while private banks, PSU banks and oil and gas stocks also ended higher.
Healthcare and pharma stocks came under pressure. The Nifty Healthcare index fell 2.57%, while Nifty Pharma dropped 1.84%. Metal and consumer durable stocks also declined.
Banking stocks gave some support to the market. Kotak Mahindra Bank and ICICI Bank were among the key gainers. On the other hand, Eternal, Sun Pharma, Titan, Tata Steel, Adani Ports and HDFC Bank were among the stocks that fell.
Brent crude rose 0.82% to $103.43 a barrel, while WTI crude gained 0.37% to $89.71.
Foreign investors sold shares worth around Rs 9,980 crore on Tuesday, according to media reports. Investors are now watching crude prices, foreign fund flows, US bond yields and global developments for further market direction.
