5 Tamil Nadu Cops Face Action Over Bribery Claims

Five police personnel in Tamil Nadu have faced disciplinary action within a week in separate cases involving allegations of demanding or accepting bribes, as per media reports.

The action, ranging from suspension to dismissal, was taken in cases reported from Tirunelveli, Chennai and surrounding areas. The alleged bribes ranged from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000.

Head constable Sorna Raj of Melapalayam Police Station in Tirunelveli City was suspended after allegedly seeking Rs 1,000 from a two-wheeler rider during a vehicle check. The rider reportedly had incomplete documents, following which the officer allegedly shared his Google Pay number for payment.

In Chennai, sub-inspector Sivaraj and constable Vivek of North Beach Police Station were suspended after an Internal Vigilance Cell enquiry into an alleged Rs 10,000 payment through Google Pay. The payment was reportedly linked to the release of a stolen two-wheeler.

A sub-inspector posted at Madhavaram Police Station was also suspended after a preliminary Internal Vigilance Cell enquiry reportedly established a complaint that the officer had demanded a bribe.

The most serious action was reportedly taken against sub-inspector Marishwaran of Puzhal Police Station, who was dismissed following a departmental enquiry into allegations of demanding and accepting bribes.

The allegations reportedly date to 2024, when he was posted at Anna Nagar Police Station. The departmental proceedings found the charges established, as per media reports.

The latest actions come amid continued scrutiny of corruption allegations involving police personnel in Tamil Nadu.
