NEW DELHI: Smriti Mandhana has been appointed captain of the India women’s cricket team, replacing Harmanpreet Kaur as the BCCI begins a new chapter for the side.
The 29-year-old will lead India’s white-ball teams after gaining leadership experience with the national side and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Mandhana has previously captained India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. She has been a key member of the national team since making her international debut in 2013.
Her leadership credentials were further strengthened by her success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, which she led to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.
Mandhana said it was a special honour to lead India and thanked the BCCI, selectors and her teammates for their trust.
She also acknowledged Harmanpreet’s contribution as captain, saying she had led the team with “great commitment” over the years.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas backed Mandhana to handle the responsibility, citing her experience and leadership qualities.
BCCI honorary secretary Devajit Saikia also pointed to Mandhana’s success with RCB as evidence of her credentials.
Mandhana will now lead India into its next phase while continuing to play a key role with the bat.
