Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Detained During Delhi Protest

NEW DELHI: Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were among several Opposition leaders detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday following a protest in New Delhi over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

INDIA bloc MPs had marched towards the Election Commission of India (ECI) office, seeking to raise concerns over the SIR process and requesting a meeting with election officials. Police stopped the march near the ECI office, following which the protesters gathered at Akashvani Bhawan.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other Opposition leaders continued their protest at the site for several hours. Police later moved to clear the area and detained several protesters.

Trinamool Congress leader Derek O’Brien said Opposition leaders were being taken away in a bus after the detention. Other Opposition leaders were also reported to have been detained during the protest.

The Opposition has raised concerns about the SIR exercise and alleged irregularities in the electoral-roll revision process. The Election Commission has rejected suggestions of differences within its three-member panel and said decisions relating to the SIR were taken unanimously.

The protest comes amid an ongoing political disagreement between Opposition parties and the Election Commission over the electoral-roll revision exercise.
