BHOPAL: A 50-year-old man in Bhopal allegedly attacked his live-in partner with a hammer before dying by suicide after believing she was dead, police said on Sunday.
The incident occurred around 11 am in the Sonagiri C-Sector area under the jurisdiction of Pipalani police station.
According to police, the accused struck the woman on the head with a hammer during a domestic dispute. He then allegedly slit his throat and stabbed himself in the abdomen with a knife.
Both were taken to hospital after police received information about the incident. The man was declared dead, while the woman survived and is undergoing treatment.
Police said the deceased worked as a private driver and had been living in Sonagiri. His wife had died around five years ago, after which he began living with the woman, who had been separated from her husband for a long time.
The woman works as a domestic help and cook in nearby households, police said.
Investigators said the couple frequently argued, with preliminary inquiry suggesting that the man suspected the woman of infidelity. However, police said the exact reason behind the incident is yet to be established.
A forensic team visited the spot and collected evidence. The knife allegedly used in the suicide was seized, while the body was sent for post-mortem examination.
The woman was initially admitted to a private hospital before being shifted to Hamidia Hospital, where she remains under treatment for serious head injuries.
