Putin to attend BRICS summit in New Delhi in September

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit New Delhi on 12–13 September to attend the BRICS summit. The Russian Embassy in South Africa confirmed the visit, citing Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov.

“President of Russia Vladimir Putin will attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12–13,” Ushakov said in a post on X.

India will host the annual BRICS summit in September as the current chair of the grouping.

This will be Putin’s second visit to India in less than a year. He last travelled to New Delhi in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia annual summit.

Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov visited New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. He later said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Russia this year. He described the upcoming meetings as part of preparations for a “top-level summit”.

BRICS was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. It expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia joined in 2025.

The grouping now has 11 major emerging economies. It represents about 49.5% of the global population, around 40% of global GDP and roughly 26% of global trade.
