BJP MLA Pritam Lodhi Calls Notorious Dacoit ‘Friend’, Triggers Political Row in Madhya Pradesh

BJP MLA Pritam Lodhi has sparked a political controversy after describing slain dacoit Rambabu Gadariya as a friend and recalling his association with him during a community event in Shivpuri district.

Addressing a gathering organised by the Pal-Baghel community in Pichhore on the birth anniversary of Lokmata Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, the Pichhore MLA paid floral tribute to a photograph of Gadariya and spoke about their relationship.

Gadariya was a notorious dacoit whose name was linked to several criminal cases, including the killing of 13 members of the Gurjar community in a massacre that drew national attention.

Speaking at the event, Lodhi said he and Gadariya had stood by each other during difficult times and claimed the outlaw had been driven towards crime by circumstances.

“We were companions in each other’s joys and sorrows. I knew Rambabu’s circumstances very well. He was pushed towards becoming a dacoit because of the way he was treated,” Pritam Lodhi said.

The MLA argued that society often ignores the circumstances that lead individuals towards criminality. Referring to a past incident involving an alleged atrocity against a woman, he said he had supported the family at a time when many viewed his actions as backing a criminal.

Lodhi also said he had met Gadariya both in jail and in the forests during the period when the outlaw was active. He described himself as fortunate to have had the opportunity to pay tribute to Gadariya’s photograph.

The remarks have drawn attention because of Gadariya’s criminal record and his alleged involvement in one of the region’s most notorious episodes of bandit violence.

During his speech, the BJP legislator pledged continued support to the Pal-Baghel community and compared that commitment to the support he had extended to Gadariya’s family in the past.

The statement is the latest in a series of remarks by Lodhi that have generated controversy. In recent months, he has also made headlines over comments directed at police officials and administrative officers.

According to historical accounts, Gadariya became involved in criminal activities in the late 1990s following a family dispute that escalated into violence. He later emerged as a feared dacoit operating in parts of the Chambal region and adjoining districts.

Lodhi’s comments have reignited debate over the public portrayal of individuals associated with serious criminal cases and are likely to draw reactions from both political opponents and victims’ groups.
