BHOPAL: Twisha Sharma’s husband, Samarth Singh, and his mother, retired judge Giribala Singh, were sent to 14 days of judicial custody by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Tuesday, according to media reports.
The court ordered the two accused to be lodged in Bhopal Central Jail until June 16 after the CBI did not seek their police remand. They will be kept separately from other inmates.
The accused were produced before the court following the completion of their remand period. During the hearing, Giribala Singh alleged that Twisha’s counsel, Anurag Srivastava, had assaulted her son at a court in Jabalpur. Srivastava denied the allegation and said CCTV footage from the court premises could be examined to verify the claim.
According to reports, Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh denied allegations of physical assault, harassment and tampering with evidence during questioning by investigators. They told the agency that their relationship with Twisha was normal and that there had been no major disputes.
Investigators are verifying the statements made by the accused against available digital records, forensic evidence and witness testimonies. The CBI also recently conducted a reconstruction of events as part of its ongoing probe.
The agency is separately examining alleged lapses in the handling of evidence. Reports said a ligature belt recovered from the scene was not immediately preserved in accordance with standard forensic procedures and was sent for examination at a later stage.
Sources cited in media reports said the CBI may question the investigating officer responsible for handling the evidence and could summon other individuals connected to the case as the investigation progresses.
The agency has not publicly disclosed its findings, and the investigation remains ongoing.
