GWALIOR: Police in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior city have uncovered a technology-savvy burglary gang allegedly led by a former computer engineering student, recovering stolen cash, gold and silver worth more than Rs 94.25 lakh in what officials described as one of the largest recoveries of the year.
The Inderganj police team arrested two additional suspects in connection with a series of burglaries targeting vacant houses across the city. Investigators said the gang used digital tools and encrypted communication methods to evade police detection.
According to police, the alleged mastermind, a former computer engineering student, formed an organised gang in pursuit of quick financial gains. The group is accused of carrying out burglaries at unoccupied properties and concealing the stolen valuables in remote areas.
The case came to light following a burglary on May 5, when thieves broke into a locked house in the Inderganj area and stole jewellery, cash and other valuables. A case was registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), prompting an investigation.
During questioning, police learned that the gang communicated through Instagram calls and secret chat features rather than conventional phone calls or messaging applications, making it more difficult for investigators to track their activities.
Police said the accused attempted to mislead investigators for nearly 48 hours after arrest. Further interrogation later helped officers uncover details of the operation and locate the stolen property.
Acting on information provided by the suspects, police searched a ravine area beyond Panihar Toll Plaza, where the gang had allegedly buried stolen items underground and hidden them beneath rocks.
Officers recovered approximately 300 grams of gold, 14.5 kilograms of silver and an i20 car allegedly purchased using proceeds from the thefts.
Police said several suspects, including a juvenile and an alleged receiver of stolen property, have been arrested in connection with the case. Further investigation is underway.
