New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday announced the formation of a high-powered task force, headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani, to recommend reforms aimed at making India’s examination system more transparent, reliable and technology-driven.
In a video message posted on X, Modi said the Centre has taken several steps to protect students’ interests and strengthen the integrity of public examinations. He added that those responsible for compromising students’ futures were now behind bars, though he did not name any individuals or cases.
The Prime Minister said the government has introduced provisions for fast-track courts and is working towards bringing stricter legislation in Parliament to deal with examination-related irregularities.
He said the government was committed to improving the credibility of the examination system by increasing transparency and expanding the use of technology.
As part of these efforts, Modi announced that the task force, led by Nandan Nilekani, would examine the existing examination framework and submit recommendations at the earliest. The government, he said, would act on the panel’s suggestions to strengthen the conduct of future examinations.
The announcement comes a day after the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The resignation followed weeks of nationwide protests by students and youth over alleged examination paper leaks. According to media reports, the protests began at Jantar Mantar on June 20 and later spread to several parts of the country.
Meanwhile, the Union government is expected to introduce the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha on Monday. According to official announcements, the proposed amendments seek to strengthen the existing legal framework by prescribing stricter penalties, ensuring time-bound investigations and trials, and establishing special fast-track courts to deal with examination-related offences.
