Members of the Sanyukt Rahwasi Sangarsh Samiti in Bhopal have announced plans to file a contempt petition in the Supreme Court against the Bhopal Municipal Corporation.
The announcement follows the expiration of a 10-day civic notice period aimed at sealing illegal commercial establishments operating inside residential plots. Local residents report that despite the official deadline passing, commercial complexes in upscale neighborhoods like Arera Colony and Rohit Nagar continued standard business operations without municipal interruption.
Bhopal Municipal Notice Expires But Sealing Drive Fails To Start
The Bhopal Municipal Corporation previously identified nearly 1,000 illegal commercial units functioning on plots approved strictly for residential housing. Municipal officials had publicly announced that active sealing operations would start immediately after the 10-day notice period ended on Thursday.
However, on-ground inspections conducted by resident welfare groups revealed that major commercial centers remained open throughout the day.
Bhopal residents state that civic teams executed minor symbolic actions against a few small street vendors while leaving large, influential commercial complexes untouched. Many of these multi-story commercial buildings operate without mandatory Building Completion Certificates, directly violating approved residential blueprints.
Residents Allege Selective Action And Misleading High Court Submissions
Local petitioner Purnendu Shukla and other residents previously filed a writ petition in the High Court highlighting unauthorized commercial construction in residential zones. While the High Court directed local administrative and municipal officials to submit status reports, residents allege that civic officials are concealing key facts to shield influential property owners.
Relying on recent Supreme Court rulings that strictly mandate local bodies to demolish or seal illegal commercial conversions on residential land, committee representative Vivek Tripathi confirmed the upcoming legal challenge.
He emphasized that the ongoing failure of the civic body to enforce municipal building bylaws severely damages basic civic infrastructure, increases traffic congestion, and creates daily safety hazards for neighborhood families.
