Police recovered more than Rs 28.5 crore in cash and around 15 kilograms of gold from the residence of a former government bus driver in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, according to media reports.
The search was carried out at the home of Minar Mondal, a former government bus driver who later entered the stone business. Media reports said Mondal is a relative of local businessman Tulu Mondal.
Officials reportedly recovered large amounts of cash kept in multiple trunks. Note-counting machines were brought to the house as police began counting the seized currency.
According to media reports, the counting process was still underway and was expected to continue until the evening. Officials said the final amount seized would be confirmed after the counting was completed.
Several kilograms of gold were also recovered during the search, according to media reports. Visuals from the scene showed a heavy police presence outside the property while the operation continued.
Police sources said Mondal left his government bus driver job a few years ago and started working in the stone trade with his relative. Authorities are investigating the source of the cash and gold, while further details are awaited.
Officials have not yet announced any arrests or disclosed the exact value of the seized assets. The investigation is continuing.
