US President Donald Trump has promised to issue a $5,000 (£3,700) dividend payout to every adult citizen in the United States if the Republican Party retains control of Congress in November’s midterm elections, according to media reports.
Speaking at a Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, Trump reportedly framed the proposed payment as a distribution tied to national economic growth.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for USD 5,000,” Trump was quoted as saying.
He added that the single requirement for the funds would be that recipients spend the payout domestically. “The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” he reportedly said.
News agencies reported that no official details were immediately made available regarding how the programme would be financed, administered, or legally structured.
Financial analysts and media commentators noted that distributing $5,000 to an estimated 270 million American adults would carry a price tag exceeding $1 trillion (£760 billion). Legal experts cited across media outlets stressed that the US Constitution grants spending authority to Congress, meaning any federal dividend would require congressional approval rather than executive action alone.
The White House did not immediately issue a follow-up statement or clarify the operational specifics of the proposal.
