NEW DELHI: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday accused the Election Commission of alleged irregularities in the electoral process and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Speaking in New Delhi, Gandhi linked his “vote chori” allegations to what he called “kanoon chori”, arguing that if votes were unlawfully affected, the legitimacy of laws passed by MPs elected through those votes would also be questioned.
Gandhi’s remarks came amid a row over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and reports of differences among Election Commissioners. Media reports said Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on several issues related to the electoral-roll process.
The Election Commission has said such queries and observations are part of its internal decision-making process and maintained that decisions, including those related to SIR, were taken unanimously.
Gandhi also alleged that the 2024 Lok Sabha and assembly elections were “rigged”, but these remain allegations made by him. He said the vote was the foundation of the Constitution and democratic institutions.
He reiterated his demand for Kumar’s resignation and accused the Centre of undermining democratic institutions.
