Raina launches report on electrifying urban public fleets

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Suresh Raina launched a report on the electrification of urban public fleets at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi, highlighting the potential for cleaner and more sustainable transport in Indian cities.

Titled “Electrifying urban public fleets: Evidence from real-world operation of electric buses and waste collection trucks in Indore, India”, the report was prepared by Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal, in collaboration with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) for the Indore Municipal Corporation.

The study examines the real-world operation of electric buses and waste collection trucks in Indore and identifies lessons that could help other cities plan and expand electric fleets.

It analyses key areas including vehicle operations, charging infrastructure, energy requirements, financial viability, institutional arrangements and environmental benefits.

Raina praised efforts to promote cleaner and more sustainable public transport, stressing the need for coordinated action among governments, local authorities, academic institutions, experts and citizens.

The report presents Indore as an important case study for electric mobility and offers insights for urban local bodies, transport agencies and policymakers seeking to improve fleet planning, operational efficiency, service quality and long-term sustainability.

Representatives from MANIT, ICCT and the Indore Municipal Corporation, along with urban transport experts, researchers and policymakers, attended the launch.

The report was authored by Aviral Yadav, Abhishek Tripathi, Kshitij Rampotra, Rahul Tiwari and Amit Bhatt.
