BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh government has increased the security deposits required for candidates contesting upcoming urban local body elections.
Under the amended rules, candidates contesting for mayor will have to deposit ₹32,000, while those contesting for municipal president will have to deposit ₹24,000.
The government has also revised nomination rules. The nomination period will be at least seven days. If the seventh day is a public holiday, candidates will be allowed to submit their nominations on the next working day.
The amended rules also set out provisions for maintaining and submitting election expenditure accounts. Candidates contesting for mayor, municipal president and councillor will be required to maintain separate bank accounts for election-related expenses.
The changes have been notified through amendments to the Madhya Pradesh Municipal Election Rules, 1994, covering nominations, security deposits, election expenditure and the recall process.
