Ebola Outbreak Prompts India Travel Advisory for Three African Nations

NEW DELHI: The Government of India has issued an Ebola outbreak travel advisory, urging citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and South Sudan following a global health alert by the World Health Organization.

The advisory came after the WHO declared the Ebola outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (IHR), 2005, on May 17, 2026.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has also classified the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security (PHECS).

Ebola Outbreak Travel Advisory Issued After WHO Warning

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which is currently affecting parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. Health agencies have identified neighbouring South Sudan as being at high risk of transmission.

The WHO Emergency Committee on May 22 recommended stricter surveillance at international entry points to identify travellers with unexplained fever arriving from affected regions. The organisation also advised against travel to areas with confirmed Bundibugyo virus detection.

Ebola Disease is a severe viral haemorrhagic fever with a high fatality rate. Authorities said there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments available for the Bundibugyo strain.

India has not reported any case linked to the current Ebola outbreak.

The government advised Indian nationals residing in or travelling to affected countries to strictly follow local public health guidelines and maintain heightened precautions.

“India has advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Ebola-affected regions until further notice amid rising international health concerns.”
