Bhopal’s municipal teams worked round the clock to clear waterlogged low-lying colonies within two hours of heavy overnight rain.
Bhopal’s municipal corporation swung into full emergency mode as incessant heavy rain battered the city, flooding several low-lying colonies and slum areas.
Corporation teams worked non-stop for 24 hours, clearing waterlogged streets, removing fallen trees and reaching out to affected residents, with drainage at every major flood spot completed within two hours of water accumulating.
Municipal Commissioner Sanskriti Jain personally took charge of the operation, inspecting flood-affected areas and low-lying colonies across the city. At several spots, she stayed on ground to personally oversee drainage work and boost the morale of civic staff.
She directed all officers to keep continuous watch over their assigned zones and ensure immediate action wherever waterlogging or other emergencies arose, so residents faced minimal disruption. Senior officials remained stationed in the field throughout, monitoring the situation and issuing on-the-spot instructions to civic teams.
To tackle the flooding, the corporation deployed dewatering pumps, JCBs, poklain machines and additional workers at every affected location, ensuring water was cleared within two hours wherever it collected.
Odia Basti cleared overnight
One of the worst-hit areas was Odia Basti, where heavy overnight rain led to significant waterlogging. Municipal teams worked on a war footing and cleared the area completely within two hours. Affected residents were shifted to safer locations, and the corporation arranged around 3,000 food packets for those displaced. Commissioner Jain also inspected Odia Basti herself and instructed officials to maintain proper drainage and prevent the area from flooding again, while ensuring residents faced no further inconvenience.
Other flooded areas cleared swiftly
Waterlogging was also reported from several other parts of the city, including Banganga Road, Minal Colony, Naya Basera, Arera Colony E-7 main road, Ganesh Nagar, Laxmi Vihar, Shiv Nagar, the area opposite the slaughterhouse on Chikhlod Road, Mahamai Ka Bagh, Dwarka Nagar, Rail Coach Factory, Chola Kainchi, Purana Kabadkhana, Bhopal Talkies, Bhanpur, Khejda Baramad, Bawadiya Kalan, Mandakini Parisar, Dana Pani Road, Kailash Nagar, Ayodhya Bypass and Vidya Nagar. In each case, civic teams acted swiftly on receiving complaints and ensured drainage within two hours, bringing relief to residents.
Fallen trees removed on priority
Heavy rain also brought down several trees across the city, with reports coming in from behind the Jahangirabad Veterinary Hospital, Ishwar Nagar, Royal Market Kala Darwaza, near Ward No. 71 Ideal School, Arera Colony, Dana Pani Road and VIP Road. The corporation’s garden department acted immediately on each report and cleared the fallen trees to restore normal movement.
Complaints handled through helpline and control room
The civic body’s disaster control room and Mayor’s helpline remained active throughout, with complaints from residents and public representatives acted upon without delay. Based on inputs received at the control room, dewatering pumps were installed at 16 locations across the city to speed up drainage and prevent prolonged waterlogging.
