Gwalior: A Government Railway Police (GRP) sub-inspector has been removed from active duty after a video showing a young man being assaulted by a crowd at Gwalior railway station went viral on social media.
The incident took place on June 29 at around 4 pm on Platform 2. According to railway police, a woman passenger alleged that the man tried to snatch her gold earring. After she raised an alarm, passengers caught him and assaulted him.
During the incident, the man reportedly picked up a small child who was with him in an apparent attempt to shield himself. The assault continued, and a bystander recorded the incident. The video later spread on social media.
Railway officials said personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) detained the man and handed him over to the Government Railway Police. Questions were later raised over the police response after allegations that no immediate legal action was taken against the suspect.
Following the viral video, the Railway Police Headquarters ordered an inquiry. The concerned GRP sub-inspector has been removed from active duty pending the outcome of a departmental investigation into the handling of the case.
Police said they are also identifying those seen assaulting the man in the video. Legal action will be taken against anyone found involved, officials said.
