Jeweller’s Account Frozen in Cyber Fraud Probe

Gwalior: Police are investigating a case in which money suspected to be linked to a large cyber fraud was allegedly used to purchase a 50-gram gold coin from a jewellery showroom in Gwalior.

According to police, a customer visited a jewellery shop in the city’s Sarafa market in early April and agreed to buy a 50-gram gold coin. The customer initially made part of the payment through online transfers before returning the following day to complete the remaining amount through additional bank transfers and cash. The jeweller then issued a GST invoice and handed over the gold coin.

About 20 days later, the jeweller’s bank account was placed on hold after Rs 5.10 lakh credited to the account was flagged through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP).

Police later informed the jeweller that the amount was suspected to be part of a Rs 14 crore cyber fraud reported by a businessman in Bengaluru. According to investigators, the funds are believed to have been transferred to the jewellery shop as payment for the gold coin.

The jeweller subsequently filed a complaint with the local police, following which a case was registered and an investigation was launched.

Police said documents submitted during the purchase have helped identify a person of interest, and efforts are underway to locate them. Investigators are also examining the digital transaction trail as part of the probe.

Officials said CCTV footage from the showroom was unavailable because the system retained recordings for only 15 to 20 days. However, they said the investigation is continuing based on documentary and digital evidence.
