Sagar, Madhya Pradesh: Police in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district have uncovered an alleged marriage fraud racket in which a group is accused of deceiving unmarried men and their families through fake marriages before stealing cash and valuables. According to media reports, several suspects, including a woman alleged to have posed as a bride, have been arrested.
Investigators said the group allegedly targeted men who had difficulty finding a marriage partner. Using intermediaries, the suspects reportedly approached families with promises of arranging a quick marriage in exchange for substantial payments. Police said the ceremonies were conducted in a manner intended to appear genuine, reducing suspicion among the victims.
According to the investigation, the alleged bride would remain with her husband’s family for a few days, gain their trust and become familiar with the household. Police allege that she later left the home with jewellery, cash and other valuables before cutting off all contact. Mobile phones linked to the suspects were reportedly switched off after the incidents.
The investigation began after a victim’s family lodged a complaint. Police formed a special team and, using technical evidence, mobile phone location data, bank transaction records and local intelligence, traced the alleged network and made multiple arrests.
According to media reports, investigators suspect the group may have carried out similar offences in other districts of Madhya Pradesh. Police are questioning the accused to identify additional alleged members, intermediaries and financial links, while also attempting to determine how many families may have been affected.
Police have advised the public to verify the identity and background of prospective marriage partners and avoid relying solely on unknown intermediaries when arranging marriages. The investigation remains ongoing.
