Water Crisis Hits Burhanpur

Burhanpur is facing a water shortage despite the implementation of a multi-crore water supply project, as water levels in the Basad dam have declined sharply, affecting supply in several parts of the city.

Members of the Tapti Seva Samiti on Thursday submitted a memorandum to officials of the Burhanpur Municipal Corporation, demanding immediate steps to restore alternative water sources and improve supply in affected areas.

Under the city’s water augmentation project, water from the Basad dam was supplied to residential areas through pipelines to ensure regular drinking water availability. However, residents in several localities are now facing disruptions amid rising summer temperatures.

In its memorandum, the committee stated that older water arrangements, including borewells and pumps in the Utavali and Tapti areas, were shut after the new scheme became operational. It alleged that some motors were also removed, making it difficult to restart the earlier system during the present crisis.

The committee demanded that closed borewells and pumps be made operational again and that alternative water sources be activated to maintain regular supply. It also urged authorities to provide water tankers in the worst-affected localities and share details about the available water capacity in the dam.
