Former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has backed Virat Kohli to score at least one century in India’s upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting November 4.
Kohli has been in impressive form in the 50-over format, scoring 854 runs in his last 12 innings at a strike rate of 117.63. His recent performance included a 139-run knock off 88 balls against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
Speaking on Star Sports, Pujara said Kohli could have a better chance of scoring a century than Rohit Sharma because of his position at No. 3 in the batting order.
According to Pujara, Kohli’s role allows him to build an innings, while Rohit, as an opener, is often expected to provide a strong start during the powerplay. However, conditions in New Zealand could influence the approach of both batters.
Pujara also shared his prediction for the series, expecting a closely fought contest between the two teams. He predicted a 2-2 result, with one match potentially being affected by rain.
He believes India could have an advantage in the first three matches but may face a tougher challenge in the final two games because of changes in the team.
Pujara said New Zealand could benefit from India not fielding the same team throughout the series. He expects the contest to remain competitive.
