Bhopal’s railway network will expand on Monday with the opening of Nishatpura Railway Station, the city’s fourth passenger railway station.
The new station, which remained ready for nearly three years despite having basic passenger facilities, will begin regular operations with Malwa Express and Somnath–Jabalpur Express making scheduled halts.
Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav will flag off the Malwa Express from Nishatpura at 5 pm, formally opening the station for passenger services. The launch is expected to improve rail connectivity for residents of north and north-west Bhopal while reducing pressure on the city’s busy Bhopal Junction.
The city currently has Bhopal Junction, Rani Kamalapati and Sant Hirdaram Nagar (Bairagarh) railway stations. With Nishatpura becoming operational, railway officials expect passenger traffic to be distributed more evenly across the network.
Three-Year Wait Ends
Although Nishatpura Railway Station was completed nearly three years ago and equipped with essential passenger facilities, regular train services could not begin because of pending operational approvals and railway planning. Officials say all necessary clearances have now been received, allowing the station to open for daily passenger services.
Bhopal Railway Division Public Relations Officer Nawal Agarwal said the station is fully prepared for operations and will gradually handle more passenger trains in the coming months.
Which Trains Will Stop?
In the first phase, Malwa Express and Somnath–Jabalpur Express will stop at Nishatpura in addition to Bhopal Junction.
The clarification comes after an earlier railway notification suggested that the two trains would bypass Bhopal Junction and stop only at Nishatpura, creating confusion among passengers. Western Central Railway later revised its order, confirming that both stations will continue to serve these trains.
Railway officials indicated that more trains could be provided stoppages at Nishatpura as passenger demand and operational requirements increase.
How the New Station Will Help Rail Operations
The opening of Nishatpura is expected to benefit not only passengers but also railway operations.
Several trains travelling towards Indore, Ujjain, Bina and Guna currently enter Bhopal Junction, where locomotive changes and other operational procedures can take up to 45 minutes. During this period, loop lines and main lines remain occupied, affecting the movement of other trains.
Railway officials believe that greater use of Nishatpura will improve train handling capacity and reduce operational congestion at Bhopal Junction, where around 230 trains pass through daily and nearly 45,000 passengers use the station.
The additional capacity may also create room for introducing new train services in the future.
Relief for Some, Challenges for Others
While the new station is expected to benefit thousands of passengers living in nearby areas, some commuters have raised concerns about road connectivity.
The approach road to Nishatpura already experiences heavy traffic, particularly through Nadra Bus Stand, Chhola Road and adjoining stretches. Passengers fear that reaching the station during peak hours could take longer than travelling to Bhopal Junction.
Residents have also pointed out that auto-rickshaw and other local transport fares to Nishatpura may be higher than those to Bhopal Junction, potentially increasing travel costs for some passengers.
Infrastructure Around the Station
During an inspection on Monday, Cooperation, Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Vishvas Sarang reviewed preparations at the station and said the surrounding infrastructure is being strengthened.
He said Nishatpura falls within the Narela Assembly constituency, where several flyovers have already been built and another is under construction. A new railway overbridge connecting Dwarka Nagar near Platform No. 1 of Bhopal Junction to Nishatpura is also planned.
According to the minister, the proposed overbridge will pass over six railway tracks, making it one of the country’s first railway overbridges of its kind.
NSG-3 Category Status
Nishatpura has also been upgraded to the NSG-3 (Non-Suburban Grade-3) category under the revised railway station classification system introduced in 2017.
The classification is based mainly on passenger footfall and determines the level of passenger amenities and operational facilities provided at a station. Railway officials said the station’s public announcement system and other passenger services have already been upgraded to match its new category.
With passenger services beginning from Monday, Nishatpura is expected to play a larger role in Bhopal’s rail network. While its long-term success will depend on additional train stoppages and improved road connectivity, railway officials believe the station will gradually reduce congestion at Bhopal Junction and provide a more convenient travel option for residents in the city’s northern areas.
