NEW DELHI: The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Monday alleged that the Centre had failed to honour its assurance that no punitive action would be taken against protesters after the suspension of the nationwide student agitation.
The party warned that it would resume its protests if students arrested in recent days were not released and police action continued.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das claimed that students and protesters in Bihar, West Bengal and Assam had been detained and booked despite what the party described as an understanding reached with the government before the agitation was suspended.
“CJP suspended its nationwide movement after receiving an assurance that no action would be taken against protesters. If that assurance is not honoured, it will amount to a betrayal of the trust placed by millions of young people,” Das said.
The party alleged that hundreds of students had been arrested and booked in what it described as false cases. However, government authorities had not immediately responded to the allegations at the time this report was published.
The warning marks a fresh escalation after CJP had earlier paused its nationwide campaign following talks with the Centre. Party leaders said they would closely monitor developments over the coming days before deciding on the next phase of the movement.
Legal Support, Grievance Portal Announced
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, who was present at the press conference alongside CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, said his role would be limited to providing legal assistance in matters related to the party.
CJP also announced the launch of an online grievance portal, inviting students and protesters who claim to have faced police action to submit details of their cases. According to the party, users can upload case documents, videos and other material that may support their claims.
The party said the portal would help compile information from across the country and assist those seeking legal remedies.
Fresh Allegations After Protest Suspension
Earlier in the day, Das posted on X alleging that students and protesters were being detained in Assam, West Bengal and Bihar despite the suspension of the agitation. He claimed that police action continued even after the government had assured the organisers that no participant would face punitive measures.
The government has not publicly responded to these specific allegations.
Sonam Wangchuk Returns to Ladakh
The developments came after activist Sonam Wangchuk was discharged from hospital on Monday following the end of his 26-day fast. Before leaving for Ladakh, he visited Rajghat in New Delhi to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
Speaking to reporters, Wangchuk said the movement had strengthened his faith in the power of non-violent protest.
“For the past five to six years, we have followed Mahatma Gandhi’s path of non-violence in Ladakh, and we found it highly effective. This movement has reinforced my belief that Gandhian methods remain relevant and can bring about solutions even today,” he said.
While the street protests have ended for now, the political and legal battle appears set to continue. CJP has maintained that it will decide its future course of action based on the government’s response to its concerns over the alleged action against students and protesters.
