MUMBAI: Indian benchmark indices ended mixed on Thursday, as strong buying in Tata group stocks and select large companies helped the Nifty recover, while the Sensex closed almost flat, as per media reports.
The BSE Sensex opened at 74,182.62 and ended at 74,314.59, down 21.86 points, or 0.03%. The Nifty 50 opened at 23,195.25 and gained 53 points, or 0.23%, to close at 23,270.60.
Tata Steel was the top Sensex gainer, rising 2.82% to Rs 188. Several other Tata group stocks also gained after Tata Sons approved a fresh five-year term for N Chandrasekaran as executive chairman.
BEL, IndiGo, Eternal and Maruti also advanced, while HDFC Bank, Titan, ICICI Bank and SBI were among the major losers.
Twelve of 16 major sectoral indices ended higher. Pharma, healthcare, realty and auto stocks were among the stronger performers. Mid- and small-cap shares also outperformed the main indices.
Investors remained cautious over US interest rates, high crude oil prices and heavy activity in the IPO market. The Rs 2.3-billion NSE IPO opened for subscription on Thursday and was around 36% subscribed by 3:30 pm, according to information provided.
Brent crude traded at $103.90 a barrel, while India VIX fell 7.82% to 12.14.
